چکیده

Quantifying historical trends in tropical cyclone activity has proved difficult, but a new reconstruction reveals clear global decline over the past century, driven by an increasingly cyclone-hostile environment troposphere.

Age-related decline in global form suppression.

Visual selection of illusory 'Kanizsa' figures, an assembly of local elements that induce the percept of a whole object, is facilitated relative to configurations composed of the same local elements that do not induce a global form--an instance of 'global precedence' in visual processing. Selective attention, i.e., the ability to focus on relevant and ignore irrelevant information, declines wit...

Transcription-repair coupling and mutation frequency decline.

Mutation frequency decline (MFD) is the rapid and irreversible decrease in the frequency of certain damage-induced mutations that occurs in Escherichia coli when protein synthesis is transiently inhibited immediately after the damaging treatment (49). Transcription-repair coupling (TRC) is the preferential repair of transcribed regions at a faster rate compared to the rest of the genome (5). Th...

Chronic hypoxia abolishes posthypoxia frequency decline in the anesthetized rat.

In anesthetized rats, increases in phrenic nerve amplitude and frequency during brief periods of hypoxia are followed by a reduction in phrenic nerve burst frequency [posthypoxia frequency decline (PHFD)]. We investigated the effects of chronic exposure to hypoxia on PHFD and on peripheral and central O2-sensing mechanisms. In Inactin-anesthetized (100 mg/kg) Sprague-Dawley rats, phrenic nerve ...

A human-driven decline in global burned area.

Fire is an essential Earth system process that alters ecosystem and atmospheric composition. Here we assessed long-term fire trends using multiple satellite data sets. We found that global burned area declined by 24.3 ± 8.8% over the past 18 years. The estimated decrease in burned area remained robust after adjusting for precipitation variability and was largest in savannas. Agricultural expans...
